Hiring in the Age of LLMs
How do you hire in the age of LLMs?
I don't know.
Here's the thought process behind my current process.
Hire for critical thinkers. Given two results, which is likely correct? And why? If the person can tell you why and reason through their answer, then they are already better than a machine. How confident are they in their answer? What does their intuition tell them?
Hire good writers. I don't say this because I want language majors who can write good prompts. My experience is that a good writer can quickly organize their thoughts, write something, and then iterate on their first draft. Further, they're willing to"kill their darlings" and adjust their premise to match the facts.
Hire scientists. A scientist doesn't have to be a trained scientist in some STEM field. Being trained helps, but mostly it is about developing and testing a hypothesis, and then following the results. And doing so honestly without ego.
I expect the candidates to use an LLM during their daily work. They should have the tools as a multiplier. At the same time, a single person can only do so much. I like working with people, not robots (believe it or not).
I'm trying to find people who are smart and adaptable. LLMs are the current fashion. Before this it was "the cloud". Before that it was "the network is the computer". The world will change again when we have something better than LLMs. Can the person learn and adapt to the new fashion? Can they ignore the current hype and use the tools to work on the end goal? If the answer is yes to both question, hire them.
