I started writing my own thoughts from experience as a former Certified Domestic Violence Advocate and current board member of an Abuser Education non-profit. However, Katherine Singh@Refinery 29 does a great job of it. 

Drugs and alcohol don't cause abuse. An entitled attitude is the core of abusive relationships. In my limited experience, most victims fight back, sometimes for their lives, sometimes to stop the active abuse at that moment. Entitlement isn't tied to sexual orientation. It's tied to core attitude and beliefs. As the entitled person forces their coercive control of the victim, they ramp up from verbal, finance threats and abuse, to physical, all the way to killing their abuse victim.
